11/20 and its aftermaths

I imagine the organizers of the Toni Negri attendance at a conference in Tokyo next week have been pissed off by the Japanese authorities denying Negri access to Japan. The only apparent link with 11/20 is that the announcement of the denying was released here on March 20. Just a coincidence. Organizers must be stunned for sure, but where were they on 11/20? What were they doing on 11/20? Sleeping? After all, what is the relationship between this denying and 11/20? Nothing man, absolutely nothing.

The organizers, however, mention that they will be working further in an attempt to finally have Mr. Negri visit Japan, as they state in the Japanese language note about the cancellation of the visit. Well, let's see!

Cher Lionel, do you beleive that it's because of the "criminal" record - to teach other criminals a lesson, or because of his thought, that this has happened? That is - an attempt to block the freedom of thought, so to say, or just to "stick" to "keeping perfect appearances", if you see what I mean?

Helena (I could not make out which "identity" I should choose, so I chose "anonymous", but I sign here...)

Dear Anonymous Helena, the purpose of the Japanese authorities is a mystery to me. Are they on a mission to please another country, Italy, the USA? Is there something grey or darker in the past of Negri that links to Japan? Are they playing tough in the perspective of the G8? Surveillance camera alone do not suffice it seems. The International House of Japan is a place I assume you rarely see the blaring black trucks circling around. Is there some minister who knows someone who knew Negri?

I think there's pretty much freedom here to think in Japan, but the tools and counterparts may be lacking a little bit, so advanced is the place in the realm of no-thinking. But at this time of the year, who wants to think anyway? The booze under the flowers, the silky wind - unless it gets back nastily cold in Tokyo. I bet Negri would have been invited to sip a few drinks unter den Zakura, basking in the perfect appearances of things Japanese.

You are great, yes, the season must be a real BIG factor in the selection of the timing of the conference indeed, especially as it seems the Kyoto University has been involved, they would show him around Kyoto, the "ancient capital"... My Japanese husband (I'm RUssian myself FYI) dislikes Kyoto enormously, calling it the city of the dead - as if ghosts are kind of walking everywhere it seems to him, no real life. But foreigners adore the place somehow, mistaking it for the "carefully kept heritage of the ancient culture". Well, it's culture "for sale", so surely they will be careful to keep it in good shape. Ah, sorry, for the bitterness, I'm really so tired in the intellectual desert of Kyushu.
Thank you for the response, however! So you are in much the same loss as I am as to the exact motives, maybe the organisers will be able to extract something from the authorities in terms of explanation? J'aimerais voir cela si seulement pour satisfaire ma curiosite. Merci!
